Wind energy

From grinding grain in windmills to the gigantic wind parks in China or the USA: Man has been making use of the power of the wind for millennia. The gigantic wind power plants have also become characteristic of the landscape in Schleswig-Holstein. Their rotor blades are driven by the wind and convert the kinetic energy of the wind into electricity.

Onshore- and offshore-wind power plants provide the largest share of electricity from renewable energiy sources in Schleswig-Holstein. With 6.5 gigawatts of installed output from wind energy (status 2015) Schleswig-Holstein is in second place in a nation-wide comparison, right behind Lower Saxony (State Government of Schleswig-Holstein). On very windy days along the coast, the productivity of wind power plants can exceed the capacity of the grids in an extent that automatic down throttling is necessary. Therefore just as important as the refinement and re-powering of wind power plants are cross-cutting issues, such as the development of intelligent grids and new storage technologies.

Thanks to the size of the wind industry in the north, the network of scientists and companies in Schleswig-Holstein that are involved in generating energy from wind is extensive. This is owed to the networking done i.a. by CE WindEnergy Schleswig-Holstein. CE WindEnergy SH continued building on the foundations laid by CEwind in the years 2014 and 2015 and is now technically and in terms of human resources integrated into the EEK.SH.
